Dear Mr. Listener,
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice every other Wednesday or Thursday on Zoom for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you’re crazy for making us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us… In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal… Does that answer your question?
The Podcast Club
The Brain/Randall Meehl
At the intersection of cinematic obsession and schlocky indulgence, here lies Randall—the Robert Johnson of bridging violent montage deconstruction à la Bruce Conner with the saccharine sensibilities and comforting narrative homogenization of Nora Ephron. Randall’s love of 80s basic cable classics and post-50s avant-garde cinema come together with his nearly pathological desire to unearth the madness behind all filmic creations.
The Athlete/Alexandra Stoilas
If you had asked her a few years ago if she’d ever call herself a jock or a marathon runner, she’d have laughed in your face. And yet now she’s both, somehow—but like a dorky jock? She’s an enigma wrapped in a croissant. Loves: sci-fi, fantasy, true crime, gore, and action movies; cats; running; baking/food; and MLP:FIM (IYKYK). Hates: occult/ghosty scary movies; idiots. Her base state is burger.
The Basket Case/Bryce Weinert
Bryce loves three things: cats, movies, and shouting her opinions from the rooftops. She adores horror, can’t stand romantic comedies, and thinks the Powers That Be are making too many superhero movies, but shows up for all of them anyway. She hopes that Dwayne Johnson will someday play her in the biography of her life.
The Princess/Dayna Webber
Officially recognized by The Bureau of Freakishly Specific Photographic Memory as a Walking Encyclopaedia of Pop Culture Knowledge with a specialization in 80s-90s movies and television; Dayna reps for the romantics, the lovers of sitcoms, rom-coms and regular coms(idies), musical theater geeks, drag queen super-fans and girls that are the only female in the rock band.
The Criminal/Helen Stoilas
Stealing hearts and making headlines since 2003, this arty farty writer hasn’t met an action movie she didn’t like—except maybe The Fast and the Furious. Boy that’s some bad acting. She also loves sci-fi, all things comic book related, and Tom Selleck in all his 80s shorty shorts glory.
